Fibres of synthetic polymers serve equally well as plastics and offer tremendous possibilities for fabrication. Among them, fibre glass, aramid fibre (Kevlar) and carbon fibre (graphite) are the most important reinforcing fabrics.

Fiberglass is a lightweight, extremely strong, and robust material. Its bulk strength and weight properties are also very favourable when compared to metals, and it can be easily formed using moulding processes. The plastic matrix used is an epoxy. Common uses of fiberglass include high performance aircraft (gliders), boats, automobiles, baths, hot tubs, water tanks, roofing, pipes, cladding, casts, surfboards and external door skins.

Fiberglass is an immensely versatile material which combines its light weight with an inherent strength to provide a weather resistant finish, with a variety of surface textures. Ideal for many general purpose applications viz. boats, mannequins, roofing, helmets, storage tanks etc.

Aramid fibres are a class of heat-resistant and strong synthetic fibres. They are used in aerospace and military applications, for ballistic rated body armour fabric and ballistic composites, in bicycle tires, and as an asbestossubstitute. They are fibres in which the chain molecules are highly oriented along the fibre axis, so the strength of the chemical bond can be exploited. Consists of long molecular chains highly oriented with strong interchain bonding resulting in a unique combination of properties.

Although carbon fibre can be relatively expensive, it has many applications in aerospace and automotive fields, such as Formula One racing. The compound is also used in sailboats, rowing shells, modern bicycles, and motorcycles because of its high strength-to-weight ratio and very good rigidity. It offers exceptionally high strength and stiffness combined with extremely light weight.

Carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer is used extensively in high-end automobile racing. The high cost of carbon fibre is mitigated by the material's unsurpassed strength-to-weight ratio, and low weight is essential for high-performance automobile racing.

It has also found application in the construction of high-end audio components such as turntables and loudspeakers, again due to its stiffness.
